  • Maillita can allow SPAMMERS to send mail through your computer. Read about how to prevent this.
  • Want an alternative to Maillita? There's a Russian program, X-Ray, that does some of the same things, though it doesn't have logs. It even does some things better, like switching between SMTP mail servers. It's geared toward a fine e-mail program called The Bat but it will work with just about anything. You can download X-Ray from here (60kB) if you need to, too.

A couple of years ago, a smart fellow named Bart Kerver produced a program that would remove the annoying x-mailer header from ANY mail. It acted as a sort of small, simple SMTP server and accepted the mail from the mail program, then passed it on to your real SMTP server. You could also use it to provide SMTP service to your friends, if they had a boneheaded ISP that wouldn't let them use their proper "from" address, for example. Those of you using Eudora also might be able to find other header-changing tools on this page.

As time went on, Maillita got better and better. Soon it would filter ANY header, or the body of the message; it would keep logs, allow or deny SMTP access to others, and one day it was hoped that it would offer encryption and decryption services.
Alas, this was not to be: Maillita disappeared, and Bart is no longer engaged in public development of the program. (Though he did offer to take it up again if there was a lot of interest.) I offer you the versions I have, in the hopes that you will find them useful. I can't guarantee that I'll be able to help you. If you can't get it to work, please check out the troubleshooting guide before you email me. If you have other versions, PLEASE MAIL ME ONE! I'm trying to compile a site that offers all the circulating versions. All the versions I have here are use at your own risk.

Any version of Maillita below will add an extra header like "x-priority:" or "x-forwarded-from:" if you set up the Add Header or Add Line option.

Finally, I want to point out that if I ever get any user feedback, I'll be sure to post it where all can read it. Like I always say, "let me know."

    Available English Versions for Win95/8/NT4:

    Maillita 1.0r

This version won't replace both the message-id and x-mailer headers in the same message. It's picky as all get-out, but it works.

    Maillita 1.2 b7

This version seems to offer most of the functionality of 2.0.5, with the advantage that it doesn't expire. Run the "update.exe" first if you have installed another version of Maillita; this will update your registry. You will still need to manually re-enter the SMTP settings, but the filters will carry over to/from the 2.0 versions. If you don't want any headaches, this is the version for you!

    Maillita 2.0.5 b4

A date-changing program is included, because this beta expired on 12/31/97. It's mostly stable, however, and not too beta-ish. If you change the x-mailer header, the message-id header is changed in a strange way.....anyone who understands this, let me know. SMTP ports higher than 1999 are disabled. This version will also let you add extra headers and text to any part of the message.

    Maillita 3.0.15 Nonfunctional Beta

This version may complain that there's not enough space on your drive. The reason? Maillita 3.0 was a total rewrite--and the new file-based I/O was allergic to FAT 32 and presumably also to NTFS. Derek Tam was nice enough to send me a replacement for this one, but his copy didn't work either. Your milage may vary, but I'd appreciate any reports you have to give on working setups.

    Available Chinese Versions for Win95/8/NT4:

    Maillita 3.05 ???

I can't tell if this version works. I can't read a word it says, in fact. What good is it? Well, I found it, so here it is. I don't know if it's traditional or simplified, Mandarin or Cantonese. The author's email addresses have all died out. Have fun guessing the settings!
